The song was recorded as a desperate effort to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof had watched a horrifying news report in October 1984 by Michael Buerk which brought the horror of the famine in Ethiopia home to Bob Geldof. He was determined to do something. He started to ask friends in the rock industry whether they had seen the report and asking if they would be willing to help raise money for famine relief. Bob Geldof and Midge Ure composed the song "Do they know its Christmas?" and it was released on 29 November 1984. Following the success of the record Bob Geldof then went on to stage the massive concert Live Aid in July 1985.
